How to Eat Healthy at SXSW

Eat Healthy at SXSW

Next week I’m flying out to Austin, Texas to attend the South by Southwest Interactive conference, also known as SXSW.

Traveling always involves a lot of planning from the plane tickets to the accommodations. One of the things that I’ve found incredibly useful is to also plan out my healthy eating strategy.

To give you a glimpse into what I’m doing to get ready for SXSWi here are my suggestions to eat healthy at SXSW…

Note: All of these recommendations are based on my extensive travel experience throughout Europe and Asia. I learned a lot of these the hard way, so you don’t have to. :)

Eating Raw on the Plane

If the first part of your journey takes you on an airplane, you’ll need to bring some food that you can eat immediately.

I like to bring some fruits that don’t bruise easily like apples, peaches, plums, and so on. I also usually bring a few bananas to eat at the gate while I’m waiting for my flight.

I have had trouble bringing oranges onto a plane going from Canada to the United States. The citrus import laws are different, but it still baffles me that you can’t bring and orange that was grown in Florida back into the United States. Anyways, that’s just my little rant.

In general you can bring fresh fruits and vegetables onto a plane, as long as you plan on eating them in the air. They just don’t want you to declare any plant products at customs when you land.

Bring Food From Home

There are certain things that you can pack and bring with you, saving you time and effort once you arrive.

Dehydrated Snacks

If you have a dehydrator you can make some fruit leather to pack with you. I’ve already made a large batch of green smoothie “leather”, that’s just a green smoothie that I’ve dehydrated.

I’ll be bringing several sheets of green smoothie leather in a baggie and it makes a great snack because it’s light and super nutritious.

Make a Trail Mix

Another great thing to bring is a trail mix or some nuts and seeds. You can bring a few different types of nuts or you can just mix them all ahead of time. This is an awesome snack if you need something a little heavier too.

Pack Larabars

Of course you can always bring along a few Larabars or other raw bars. These pack well and no one will confiscate a packaged bar from you as you board your plane.

They’re also very much like a treat, so carry one with you if you feel tempted by unhealthy desserts or snacks while you’re out.

Do Your Research

Beets cafe Salad

You can always do research about nearby restaurants and juice bars before you leave. If you leave it to the last minute or plan to do it once you arrive, you’re a lot less likely to follow through.

Here are a few Austin specific restaurants and juice bars, just to get you started:

How did I find these places? One of my favorite vegetarian friendly restaurant review sites is called Happy Cow. Check out the Vegetarian restaurants in Austin.

Get Thee to a Grocery Store

One of the first things I like to do when I land is to find a grocery store. You can research these before you leave and find the closest one to your hotel.

Some of stuff I buy when I go to a grocery store on a trip include:

  • Bananas
  • Apples
  • Oranges
  • Baby carrots
  • Whatever vegetables look good

Bring a Reusable Water Bottle

I’ve found that the most important trick to stay healthy when traveling is to drink plenty of water. It’s hard to think of drinking water when you’re always on the go, so bring your own reusable water bottle.

They may make you empty your water bottle before you board the plane but at least you’ll have it when you land and you can use it throughout your trip.

Trust me when I say that drinking more water can make the difference between getting sick or feeling tired. Water is definitely more important than food in this way.

Prepare Ahead of Time

Bring food with you everywhere you go, even if you’re going to a restaurant at some point during the day. You never know when you’ll be hungry or faced with nothing but a vending machine.

Another tip is to bring a blender with you, or find out if anyone will have one with them. This may be a little bit hardcore for some people, but I know that I personally do better with a green smoothie or green juice daily.

If you don’t bring a blender then you can definitely get green juice at most juice bars.

I usually bring a few whole fruits with me wherever I go, along with some nuts, and a water bottle.

It may seem heavy, but when you’re getting a lull in energy it’s totally worth it to take out a banana from your bag and feel satisfied.

Go with the flow & have fun!

After all of these tips, I’m going to recommend that you not be too hard on yourself! After all, you’re going to SXSW or whatever event you’re going to for a reason. And it’s probably to have fun, learn some stuff, and meet great people. Not to be obsessed about the food.

You’ll probably eat something that you wouldn’t have eaten were you in your normal environment. That’s fine!

Like I mentioned in my how to eat raw when you’re eating out post, it’s a lot more about your attitude than it is about the food itself.

So enjoy yourself, be gentle on yourself, and enjoy the great company. :) If you’ll be at SXSW interactive, follow me on Twitter and be sure to say hi!

Got Any More Recommendations?

The tips in this post are all based on my experience, but I know you’ve also got some great tips and expertise to share.

Leave a comment below and let me know what has worked for you, and what you recommend for making the best of SXSW and travel!

Love, Nathalie

    Hey Nathalie!
Have a super great time at SXSW!!!!

And – my favorite on your list: prepare ahead of time. Preparation can be a real key to staying the course, especially when we are someplace where the course is likely different than we are used to.

    Hi Lance!
Thanks so much for the warm wishes, I'm super excited. :)

You're spot on… preparation is key, and that's true for pretty much everything we want to be successful at in life. :)

  • http://randomsarah.com sarahcooley

    Great post! Thanks.
Can't wait to meet you :)

  • http://rawfoodswitch.com Nathalie Lussier

Yay so glad it was useful. I'm really looking forward to meeting you too! :) Geek girls unite. ;)

  • jodiontheweb

Great post. I am a former vegetarian trying to get back on the healthy eating track and I'm heading to SXSW a week from today and will totally use a bunch of your tips. Thanks!!

  • http://rawfoodswitch.com Nathalie Lussier

Thanks Jodi! I'm glad the tips resonated. I know how it can be to fall off track with healthy eating, but you're not alone. Would love to meet you at SXSW too. :)

And we will happily take you to any and all of those places – especially Daily Juice. Yum yum! (:

  • http://social.usatoday.com/ Brian Dresher

Great tips and reminders as well! Definitely plan to eat some of the fun food in Austin (like BBQ!), but not really a good strategy to make that my only meal 3x per day. ; ) Also, I often take PowerBars with me when I travel, especially conferences, so that I can have a quick snack to hold me over until a meal. Yes, water, water, and more water!

  • http://rawfoodswitch.com Nathalie Lussier

Aww, you are so awesome Kyeli! :D Seriously, it's no wonder you co-wrote the course on how to be awesome. :D I can't wait to finally meet you in person too!

  • http://rawfoodswitch.com Nathalie Lussier

You're right Brian, it's great to experiment with the local foods but maybe not at 3x per day. ;) Yes water is so important, almost as important as having wireless… ahem, I mean more! More important. :)

  • lauraroeder

So bummed that I won't see you at sxsw but you are going to have a blast, and I'll be using these tips for my conference in DC!

  • http://www.jodiontheweb.com/ jodiontheweb

yes, we should definitely plan to meet up in Austin!!

  • http://rawfoodswitch.com Nathalie Lussier

I know! Which conference in DC are you going to? It must be something really cool to trump SXSW. ;) I'm super excited, and I'll want to hear about your conference too. :)

  • kathryn

How many times have you gone to SXSW Interactive? These tips are all good there's NO real grocery store near the 6th Street or Red River area. Whole Foods is a bit of a hike from the Convention Center if you don't have a car.

  • http://rawfoodswitch.com Nathalie Lussier

Hi Kathryn! I wrote the article based on my experience traveling in general and attending conferences. This will be my first year going to SXSW. :) I know what you mean about having a hard time getting to a grocery store. I've had that problem in other place and usually I just get what they've got at corner stores. So sometimes I'll just buy bananas and apples because that's all they've got at the corner store. Hope that helps! :)

Have a great trip! I also pack either a lemon or organic lemon juice. The one I use is 3 ounces and shaped like a lemon. A few drops alkalizes drinking water. You didn't mention flax crackers, which I also enjoy, and I make my own granola. It can be as simple as raw nuts and dried fruits, cacao nibs, gogi berries, that kind of thing. I also like to pack celery sticks. Don't forget the flight home. That's the most challenging part of the trip because you don't have your own kitchen to draw from and must rely on getting to a grocery store.

  • http://rawfoodswitch.com Nathalie Lussier

Great tips Nancy! I know the trip home is usually the worst because you're tired from your time and you're also least likely to have food on hand. Sometimes I just do my best to drink more water on the way home, and skip the plane meals in favor of taking a nap. ;)

First of all, I'll be at SXSW if you want to grab a healthy meal.
Secondly- great post! I think it applies to any event, not just SXSW, but it definitely applies.

I've been leaning towards going raw for a while again…. last year, I had such clarity, lost weight, and life was good. Lately I've been too influenced by other's dietary choices though.

  • http://rawfoodswitch.com Nathalie Lussier

Hey Ori! I'd love to meet you at SXSW and grab a healthy meal together. :) I've added you to my list of people to meet at SXSW on twitter, and really looking forward to it!

I know what you mean about being influenced by other people's dietary choices, it's tough to go a different direction among your peers and friends. I'm here if you need some support or a cheerleader! ;)

  • greenandchic

You have a great list so far. Since I cant eat a lot of sugars (even certain fruits) its a little difficult traveling for me. I tend to default to nuts, homemade raw unsweetened “energy bars”, fats, and low GI fruits that I can take with me. Sometimes, I ship a small box of things I know I will need at my destination, but it depends on where I'm going. Bay Area, LA, NYC, Portland, Seattle, etc – no problem! Other areas are a little harder.

  • http://rawfoodswitch.com Nathalie Lussier

I know what you mean about certain cities being more friendly for the health-conscious. I love NYC and San Fran for that. You can pretty much just walk around and find something healthy. :) I do like the idea of shipping things ahead of time, that's really smart Carla!

  • lindaeaves

Have a great time at SXSW and I am going to swipe a lot of these tips for my blog too. [Of course will credit you] Thank you so much for publishing this and will keep it handy for my next trip so I can prepare.
    Much appreciation to you!

  • http://rawfoodswitch.com Nathalie Lussier

Awesome stuff Linda! :) Yay for traveling!

  • http://randomsarah.com sarahcooley

I just checked and I'm so excited that Daily Juice is close to where I'm staying. I'm staying a little far away from the convention center with a friend, but it's only a short walk away from the new daily juice location that also has a cafe.

I'm excited because I was unsure if I could go without my green juice in the morning.
