Pendulum Swings Part 2: Birth Control Pills Gone Wrong

If you haven’t read Part 1 of The Pendulum Swings: From Junk Food to Raw Food, read it now before continuing.

I had just discovered the healing powers of raw foods, but my adventure was just getting started…

(Also, this post talks about menstruation, so guys if you’re squirmish, just skip the rest! Thanks.)

No More Menstruation

After stopping the pill, I went a whole year without menstruating. At first I was kind of excited, I didn’t have to worry about pads or tampons, and I thought it was completely natural.

I read online that there were other raw vegans who didn’t have their period. Now since there wasn’t any scientific evidence to the benefits of not having a period, I decided to investigate.

I’m still not sure whether it’s normal not to have your period on raw foods, but I know in my case, it was caused by a deeper issue, and not because my body was super clean.

While I was living in California, I made an appointment at a bio-identical hormone clinic. The doctors said they had never heard of a case like mine before, and that it would cost $2000 just to run the tests to figure out what was wrong with me.

To say that I didn’t have that kind of money, or enough faith in the medical industry, is an understatement.

Turning to Traditional Chinese Medicine

Since I had discussed everything with my boyfriend ahead of time, it was only natural for us to talk about the changes happening in my body.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

I was always tired, emotional, and still working through all of these changes. Change is hard, and I was under a lot of stress between my job and school.

When we returned to Canada, we went to see a traditional Chinese doctor. It took the doctor less than 30 minutes to figure out what was wrong with me. I paid him $20 for his time, and $100 for the first two weeks’ medicine.

The doctor also asked me what I was eating. I was afraid he would make me go back to cooked food, or worse, meat. Thankfully, he thought a vegan diet was perfectly healthy. He simply taught me how to eat foods that were warming, instead of cold. This is a concept of Traditional Chinese Medicine that talks about the yin and the yang.

So instead of eating a lot of cucumbers or radishes, I ate warm foods like bananas, lychee, and nuts.

The treatment consisted of me drinking dried herbs in a hot tea three times per day. Two weeks later, I got my period.

After a year of not having my period, worrying over my possible infertility, and being plain old tired, I was ecstatic.

Constant Struggle With Acne

Now that my period was back, it felt like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. After a few weeks following the Chinese doctor’s recommendations, I was feeling much better. I had more energy.

Yet I still had acne. The Chinese doctor told me not to worry about the acne. I trust this doctor, and I’m going to keep eating what makes me feel best, and let my skin detox by itself.

Now I’ve had my period regularly for over a year, and I’ve stopped taking medicine for it.

I truly believe that raw foods was my gateway to healthier and better ways of healing the body. I no longer poison myself with toxic and processed foods.

And when I’m feeling unwell, I go to a traditional Chinese doctor, who understands that he isn’t treating the symptoms, but rather the whole person.

    I have a question.
I've been Vegan for about 3 or 4 months now and I still haven't had a period since I went Vegan. I have even tried slipping Vegan a few times, which in return made me very sick, to see if my period would come back. I took Vitamines and yet I still haven't had a period. Is this completely normal? I'm getting kind of worried with the whole no period situation even though it was something I dreaded every month. I would love to know if you have any clue what is going on. Please feel free to email me with any clues or any suggestions.

    Thank you.
  • Hi Mysha! So sorry it took me this long to reply. I honestly think that our bodies need time to adjust and that you might want to visit a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor to see if they can help you with this issue. It's not exactly the easiest thing to solve! *big hugs*

    Hi there,

my periods are also irregular and I was worried that there were nutrients that were lacking in my mostly raw food diet. I do still ovulate however. I was on the pill for a whopping 15 years up until almost 3 years ago! i didnt get my period for about 6 months, then on and off every 6/7/8 weeks.ive been on mostly raw for the last year. My acupuncturist has been trying to bring on my period the last 2 times ive seen him and nothing! Funnily enough when i went on a detox a cpl of months ago my period came at exactly 28 days. now i havent seen it for 7 weeks. i just wish i knew if this is something i should worry about or not?!

    thanks for any advice
  • Hi Elisa! I hear you, this is such a scary / weird / worrisome situation to be in. Unfortunately I'm not a doctor and can't speak about whether this is normal or needs to be addressed. The best I can do right now is recommend you to visit a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor, because that's what worked for me. *hugs*

    Hi Nathalie,

I just came across your site while searching information about going raw and going off birth control pills. I've been raw for a couple of weeks only and also discontinued my use of birth control tablets (after more than 3 years of continuous use). I can't believe I ever did that to my body! I am wondering about the effects of suddenly not taking the pill anymore. Also, I was wondering which herbs were you taking to make your period regular? My husband and I would like to have our first baby in the near future and I wouldn't want to wait a whole year to have my period again!

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Hi Zettie!

I totally know how you feel about doing that to your body. (I mean, why is it so easy to get these things anyways?!) I've definitely heard from many women that it took awhile for their periods to return after the stopping the pill. Some older women even said it never returned, but that they weren't too worried since they didn't want to have children anyways. That being said, don't freak out - there are solutions!

I honestly cannot tell you which herbs I used to get my period back because they were in Chinese and because I believe we are all different. From what I've learned, it wasn't exactly my reproductive organs that were having issues, it was my liver, kidneys, and lungs that needed the most "work/support". After those got back into working condition my body restored my other regular functions.

My best recommendation would be to visit a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor and see what they can recommend. I'm still doing research on this topic but unfortunately I'm not an expert on herbs.

Good luck and let us know how the pregnancy goes! ;)

  • HI Natalie, I just found your blog when i was searching about menstruation and going raw. When I quit the birth pill, i lost my period for a year too, fortunately it's back now, although not 100%, sometimes I have one period each 2-3 months.
just want to say hi and great blog! :)
  • Hi Coco!

It seems to be a lot more common than I first realized. I think it's a combination of detox and imbalance that needs righting. I'm glad to hear your period is back.

Did you notice that the one period every 2-3 months happens when you eat a certain way? (i.e. summer or winter, more "hot" foods or "cold" foods?) I'm just curious because I still don't have a complete grasp on the topic. :)

    Thanks for stopping by!

Since i was a little girl I kind of questioned whether cooking is what we're menat to be doing to our food but my mom said a warm cooked meal is good for the soul - haha. Only now that I'm grown up and free to do what i want do I eat a lot more raw. I'll admit I'm not 100% raw yet. I do applaud myself for giving up coffee, meat and diary. My daughter has acne and I keep telling her to not eat all that candy and stay away from MacDonalds but she's a teenager and thinks she knows better. At home she gets organic fruit and vegetables - mostly raw meals so I hope I'm being a good example to her!
  • I know what you mean Claudia. Congrats on giving up coffee, meat, and dairy! That in itself is a huge step, and will benefit you greatly. :)

It's tough to raise children to eat a healthy diet, when they are surrounded by advertising and not-so-good food choices. I think you are doing her a great service by being a great role model!
  • Ni Hao Nathalie,

I have a webpage about diet and menstruation, even though I am a guy, but it sounds like you are familiar with the effects of a clean body on menstruation. http://www.phifoundation.org/menses.html

I used to be a distibutor for Chinese herbal formulas (Sunrider). Now I am a distributor for a Chinese herbal drink called Goyin that balances the warm and cold. I am an Irish-Jewish American but love Asian things. At age 12, I started learning yoga and martial arts (Tai Chi and Chinese Kempo).
I saw your site on Steve Pavlina's site. I have eaten at a Chinese vegetarian restaurant hundreds of times.

Go see the movies Billy Jack and Trial of Billy Jack. They are great and he does another Korean martial art called Hapkido. If I remeber correctly, Chuck Norris does a Korean martial art called Moo Duk Kwan. I feel that raw foods are the healthiest foods. In fact if you do a search for my name, Chuck Bluestein, you will find an article on hundreds of sites about using your animal instinct to eat.

Try doing the search to see. It says that the way to know what to eat that will be the healthiest, eat whatever tastes good. That it is why babies put things in their mouth to taste them. That is the best way to know (not believe for think) what is healthy for you. But the food must be raw. If you pick toadsools (poisonous mushrooms) and try to eat them raw, you will immediately spit them out since they are so bitter. But cook them up, add salt and you can eat them and then die.

So if you are ever stranded in the woods just eat whatever tastes good raw.

    Chuck
  • Hi Chuck! Wow, I'm so glad you came to share your knowledge. You have so much of it to share with us. :) It's so cool that you're into Martial Arts too.

I like your concept of eating what tastes good. I also think that there's a bit of a flaw with most of today's foods, because our bodies have lost these instinctual signals through years of eating junk food, processed food, and cooked food. But yeah, if ever I'm starved in the woods, I'm definitely going to go at it by taste. ;)

Thanks again, and see you soon Chuck!
