Food Cravings: Why They Haunt You, and What To Do About It

One of obstacles that creep up when we decide to change the way we eat is the dreaded craving for that kryptonite food of yours! The cravings, they are hard to deal with.

What are Food Cravings?

Food cravings can show up in a number of different forms. They can be all consuming, taking center stage in your mind for large parts of your day. Appearing in your dreams at night, and haunting you.

They can also be a little more subtle. That pint of ice cream you didn’t intend to buy that somehow ended up in your grocery cart. Your finger punching the speed dial number of your favorite pizza place.

Usually cravings are just that. Your body trying to deal with the changes you’re making to your diet by reminding you of the way things used to be. There’s nothing wrong with you and it’s not your fault that you crave your old favorite foods.

Sugar is Addictive

Sugar is one of the most addictive substances of all. Worse, it’s not just straight “sweet stuff” sugar, but foods that convert to sugar soon after you eat them. Like bread, pasta, and potatoes.

The reason that sugar has that extra addictive pull is a little more complex, because it has to do with your beneficial intestinal flora versus the possibility of yeast developing. Yeast doesn’t just show up in the form of feminine yeast infections, it also shows up as mucus in colds and other “side effects” such a poor digestion.

The more sugar you eat, the more you feed this yeast. If you suddenly stopping feeding the yeast by reducing your sugar intake, you can bet that the yeast is going to let you know it wants to be fed. That can come in the form of cravings.

There’s a lot more science and details to this delicate digestive balance, but that’s a whole other post to itself.

MSG & Other Addictive Substances

To make matters even more complex, you’ve got to fend off the addictive effects of processed foods. Many times the reason we find certain foods to “taste good” is through some added manufacturing processes. And a combination of MSG and “taste enhancers.”

Foods with MSG (Mono Sodium Glutamate) actually cause your body to react by salivating, and releasing feel-good hormones in your bloodstream. Soon enough, your body gets into the groove of responding to foods this way.

If you start eating whole fresh produce and foods, you’re not going to get that stimulus. Your body will start to look for this response, and if it doesn’t find it, you can be sure that you’ll get signals to go back to the foods that gave it to you.

What is Your Strongest Food Craving?

Now I’m really curious: What is your strongest food craving for? Let me know below in the comments, I want to know what’s hardest for people so I can help you.

P.S. My biggest craving tends to be for anything chocolate related, with cinnamon rolls being a close second. (Though I know of a few good raw recipes to take care of these, and with my craving spell I’ve got it covered. ;))

Hi, have just about beaten the craving demon for most sugar and beer. My biggest hurdle is the urge to grab a bar of chocolate late in the evening. Working on it though.

Thankfully, these days I don't have many food cravings due to the fact that I have eliminated certain addictive “substances” a while ago. Still on a bad day I may crave chocolate and good old fashion grains, especially brown rice though I cant eat any of it.

Hi Andy! Way to go on beating the sugar and beer cravings, those are certainly hard to beat. Ahh chocolate, I hear ya. ;) And I've noticed when talking to my clients and friends that night time is when cravings seem to gain more power.

    Thanks for sharing!

Way to go Carla! I figured grains might be tough for you since you're gluten free and don't need any grains. It's usually what we can't have that we crave most, isn't it? ;)

    Thanks so much for sharing!

Chocolate and any kind of donut. Basically, any processed sweets, which is the worst, I know.

when I crave food, i crave bread! plain WW bread. I can eat pounds of it! is that normal? what does it mean?

  • http://rawfoodswitch.com Nathalie Lussier

Ahh yes chocolate! Doughy stuff seems to hold a lot of power over us, doesn't it? Thanks for sharing Laura, it's good to see what others crave. :)

Hi Coco! Bread is totally one of the hardest habits to kick. It's got that texture, and it also turns to sugar quickly after you eat it. Pounds of it at a time is probably not ideal though.

Strangely, having been a vegatarian and vegan for years, now going raw, it's been about 6 weeks, I have started craving hamburgers….

  • http://rawfoodswitch.com Nathalie Lussier

Hey Jess, that's a really interesting craving considering your background. Do you feel that it's because you're lacking something in your diet? I have a hunch it might just be you working through some of those old layers, possibly from a time where you used to eat hamburgers.

I tend to crave the large Kit Kat bars in one of the snack machines at my college.I get between 2-4 Kit Kat bars when and if I have enough money on me.I also crave food that's in my refrigerator and freezer.I mostly don't crave sweets and I also tend crave food that I like a lot like the Lunchable Pizzas, (I know an 18 year old eating Lunchables? They're very good though),fried pork chops, garlic mash potatoes, and hot wings.Because of my food cravings,I'm overweight for my height (which is 4'11'' and I weight between 144-147 pounds) and I want to stop my food cravings so that I can lose weight. Also,my mom says that I eat a lot,but to me,I generally don't eat a lot or only a little more than average.I need help with my food cravings.Any suggestions?

Hi- I have the worst cravings on days when I workout and am very active. I get home and just want to eat anything that will make me feel full. potato chips (which I didn't even really eat prior to transitioning to raw), OR serious chocolate intake after my dinner, OR popcorn. it's so discouraging. I'm trying to eat more fat and more often and now have added in a green smoothie everyday (and only have had the blendtec for a week- so maybe it takes more time)
BUT I can't figure out how to feel full- on the days that I workout hard!

Can't wait for your cravings class to have an opening! :)

  • http://rawfoodswitch.com Nathalie Lussier

Hi! I go into full detail on this in my Cure Cravings Forever class. I do hear you on the workout side of things and it's totally normal to majorly hungry after a workout. I have a special post workout recipe for that. ;)

  • Shredpinkbetty

I'm signing up for the class when an opening becomes available! can't wait!
